Q.- What is Rosemaling?

 
  A.- Rosemaling is a decorative folk art of Norway.The term rosemaling refers to a style of decorative painting characterized by vine foliage and flowers but also including live figure representations and landscapes in religious and secular scenes. It was used to decorate furnishings and equipment, drinking vessels and eating utensils, and the interiors of houses and storehouses. This colorful decorative painting flourished for a comparatively short time in the country districts of Norway.  
     
  Q.- What is a Packet?  
  A. - A packet is a kit, made up of a hand drawn pattern, a list of materials needed, a set of instructions and a photograph of the finished product. The wood piece itself is not usually included.  
     
  Q. - Who is Jurene While?  
  A. - A renowned artist, author, teacher, and resident of La Mesa, California. Over the years her decorative painting has become a landmark in the many commercial and residential spaces in Southern Califonia. She has been honored to have several of her original Christmas ornaments accepted by the Smithsonian Institute and The White House for their holiday collections. Jurene continues to educate and interest others in the ways of folk painting through television and other special events. Her community and fellow artist have richly rewarded her with many accolades and commendations. Jurene participates annually, in rosemaling competitions at the "Vesterheim Norwegian/American Museum", where her work won "Best in Show".  
     
  Q. - What is tole painting?  
  A. - Folk art, indigenous to a geographical or cultural region.  
     
 
Q. - What is VGM?
 
  A. - The Vesterheim Gold Medal is one of Rosemalings most prestigious awards. Each year in Decorah Iowa at the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum a renowned Rosemaling painting competition is held. The highly skilled artists who present their work in this competition must contribute work for many years to accumulate the necessary points to acquire the coveted gold medal. The prized VGM title has been awarded to less than 60 artist over the last 33 years.
